• Pull the safety release out of the top of the pen.
• Press the tip of the pen firmly against the upper thigh until you hear a click.
• EpiPen can safely be administered through clothing.
• Hold the pen in place for 10 seconds.
• Remove the pen and massage the injection site for another 10 seconds.
• If symptoms do no improve within 5 minutes, administer another dose using a new pen.
• Seek emergency medical treatment.

The spring-loaded needle of an unused pen is enclosed in the tip of the device; once the needle has been deployed, the pen will not administer another dose even if there is medication leftover. Because two doses are sometimes required to control symptoms, EpiPens should always be kept in groups of at least two.

EpiPen Junior should be used only on the upper thigh; use in other locations may reduce effectiveness and produce harmful side effects.

There's No Such Thing as Too Many EpiPens

As mentioned above, a second dose of epinephrine is sometimes needed to stop an attack. For this reason there should always be a minimum of two EpiPens on hand.
